“ I was grieving the loss two feminist presidents in a row (…)”About which country is this?

Well, everytime Dom Toretto says the word “family” I stick myself in the eye with a pencil, to punish myself for watching this daft rubbish. But that being said, I agree with your conclusions.

Especially around Fantasy and SciFi literature there seems to be a lot of discussions going on these days, regarding the concept of “world-building”. Lately a lot of essays and contribution criticize it for being a contrived approach where the created environment shapes the story, instead of tangible themes. But I guess a critic is one thing and the audience is another. I would say that details are actually very much in sync with the contemporary readers or film-goers. At least it seems that productions relying heavily on world-building and details (LOTR, GoT, etc.) do not suffer from this approach.

It is overdue to recognize that “social media” (at least as we understand it now) is an oxymoron, because media can never be truly social, only “pseudo-social”. A “social” process occures only in the complete absence of any kind of media. Media can be a vehicle for information and thus ignite or support social issues (when we are lucky), but it can never replace social structures. That´s why a demonstration of 500 people in the streets of a city will always be 1000x stronger than a digital petition signed by half a million people. And yes, if you like, you can always call a rubber doll a “girlfriend”. If that´s the reality you choose. But once you take her to a party that reality becomes very frail. Social media made people like Zuckerberg grotesquely rich. It did not make the civilization more “social”. On the contrary. From now on social media will be an escalating factor of violence and atrocities. And business magnetes like Zuckerberg will always blather something about new half-baked solutions they want to introduce to remedy the situation. But once you live in a gated community you don´t really care about solutions. You just pay some fool with a laptop to be your mouthpiece and make you look good in public.

Great to read this.

Great to read this. I may be a dystopian pessimist that expects a future probably closer to “Mad Max”, simply because Homo sapiens is such an inexhaustible source of disappointment for me — but I still love to surround myself with optimists and mostly the work of optimists. So kudos to this great article. On a more winkingly note: you´ve dodged the question of religion in your itemization (aside from a parenthetic reference in context of “organ trade” — although you probably mean more something like the artificial growth of organs from stem-cells, especially through 3D-printing, which is probably where the future is going). But there is a general question if an enlightened society is ever possible while at the same time a large portion of the people believes in “sky gods” delivering their wisdom through ancient, badly translated books. But I do understand that this is a sore point at this time in history. For me the more intrinsic item is “money”, which you included in your list. I would make an argument, that all the other points and remarks can actually be melded behind this one point, since our civilization has reached a state where basically all aspects of life are foremost submitted to the mechanics of monetarism. Everything else comes later. We even give power to billionaires because we believe that they are “good people” since they were capable to accumulate an incredible wealth. Which is a train of thought that doesn´t really make any sense and might in the future be a matter of laughter for eight-year-old children. At this point we are assigning an incredible importance to some printed paper (or even worse: to endless columns of numbers running through some obscure servers) — acting like money is somewhat part of the natural laws, with the same value as the air to breath and water to drink. Which could indeed...
